An update from the Odom Park Committee chair Laura Bucaro:
“Did you know that the land around Odom Elementary School is a public, city park (when school is not in session)? It is!
As some background, some of your neighbors have been working with GO! Austin/VAMOS! Austin’s Physical Activity Sector to improve this park. GAVA is a coalition of non-profits around town committed to improving 78745’s health by creating more access to physical activity, parks, healthy food, and education. They are teaching us how to go about getting what we need for our park through coordination with the City of Austin, work with other local groups, and grant education. We are happy to announce that, by working with the city, we’ve added mutt mitt stations, trashcans, a park rules sign, and a park ID sign. We’ve also identified bigger park projects. They include: more lighting, additional picnic tables and benches, renovation of the wading pool, soccer field replacement, fitness/exercise equipment, track replacement, and run-off mitigation (via a rain garden!). We are ready to get to work making those dreams happen and could use your help.
Everyone is welcome, but we are also in particular need of BILINGUAL (Spanish/English) neighbors, and neighbors with grant writing experience, editing experience, and project management experience.
We meet monthly – usually, but not always, on the 3rd Tuesday of the month. Check our Upcoming Events page for exact meeting dates. These meetings are being held in conjunction with GAVA’s 78745’s Physical Activity Sector Team, which includes other parks in the 78745 area.
Please join us and invite anyone interested in improving park access and usage!
Contact us – If you plan to attend a meeting or want to get involved, please email email@example.com or just show up to the meetings and introduce yourself.
***Whether you want to be involved or not, we are looking for community input in prioritizing our larger projects. Please respond to this short survey. Thank you!***”
