Healthy Corner Store Initiative

Healthy Foods for a Healthy Mind and Body!
It is important that we take good care of ourselves. This not only mean we need to be active and exercise, but also try to eat as healthful as possible. The Healthy Corner Store Initiative is part of the Go! Austin/Vamos! Austin (GAVA) Initiative; which connects corner store owners and community teams to increase the availability of fresh fruits and vegetables and other healthy foods in corner stores throughout the zip codes 78745 and 78744.

The EZ Food Stores at 6400 S 1st (at Eberhart) & 719 William Cannon (at South 1st) have been part of this initiative since June of 2016, and they have since increased the availability of healthy products! Have you noticed the store carries a selection of healthy products?
Visit the EZ Food Stores with your family and pick up healthy snacks. Let the owners know that you appreciate their participation and look forward their expanding their offerings.

A Farm Stand near you!  – high quality, low prices, in our neighborhood:

Where: In front of the Odom Elementary parking lot (1010 Turtle Creek Blvd.) every Thursday from 1:30-3:30PM. We will not be open if school is out.

What is a farm stand? A farm stand is a small pop-up market that provides a space for families to purchase high-quality, fresh produce at a low cost directly in our own neighborhood. It is operated by community leaders with support from Sustainable Food Center (SFC). Local food is harvested at its peak just before being brought to market, providing the best-tasting and healthiest produce around – outside of what you pull out of your own garden!

Who is working on this project? Sustainable Food Center has worked in collaboration with GAVA leaders, specifically the Armadillo Park Neighborhood Association and Odom Elementary teams, on this project, with support from the City of Austin. SFC works through their network to connect farmers to neighborhood sites where access to healthy food is limited. Sustainable Food Center then trains leaders from the community to run their own farm stand, and provides logistical and operational support as needed.

Who is the farmer? Currently we are sourcing produce from Farmshare Asfcustin and Johnson’s Backyard Garden. Both are organic growers located about 15 miles outside of Austin.
